Letters may change when two words are joined together. The changes affect the last letter of the preceding word and the first letter of the following word as follows:

1. When the preceding word ends in a mute consonant, and the next begins with a vowel, that vowel is dropped, and its characteristic mark is joined to the mute consonant; thus:
   • அவன் இல்லை -> அவனில்லை
   • கோபம் உள்ள -> கோபமுள்ள
2. When ம் is followed by:
   • க், the ம் is changed into ங்
     • செயம்கோண்டான் -> செயங்கோண்டான் (he conquered)
   • ச், the ம் is changed into ஞ்.
     • பாவம்செதய்தான் -> பாவஞ்செதய்தான் (he sinned)
   • த், the ம் is changed into ந்.
     • புத்தகம்தந்தான் -> புத்தகந்தந்தான் (he gave a book)
3. When ல் is followed by க, ச, or ப, the ல் is changed into ற்.

But when ல் is followed by ^, both are changed
into #,

Thus: பரல்சல் gravel stone, is written பரற்
