Certain nouns have their own oblique forms. When they combine with case suffixes, their oblique forms are required.
1) Nouns ending in -அம் convert this ending to -அத்து.
E.g. மாகாணம் —> மாகாணத்து (oblique form)—> மாகாணத்தில் (locative form)
E.g. படம் —> படத்து (oblique form) —> படத்தை (accusative form)
E.g. மரம் —> மரத்து (oblique form) —> மரத்துக்கு (dative form)
2) Except for ‘minimal words’ (those with two syllables or less) and the word ஆறு (six), all nouns ending in -டு and -று double this final hard letter. Nouns ending in -அம் convert this ending to -அத்து.
E.g. நாடு —> நாட்டு (oblique form) —> நாட்டை (accusative form)
E.g. ஆறு (river) —> ஆற்று (oblique form) —> ஆற்றுக்கு (dative form)
E.g. வீடு (house) —> வீட்டு (oblique form) —> வீட்டில் (locative form)
