To the North of Illangai (Ceylon) is Tamil Nadu. To the South of Illangai is the Indian Ocean. Illangai has another name. That is Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka’s biggest port is in Colombo. Moreover its tallest mountain, Pidurangala, is in Matale. Compared to lakes, there are many mountains in Sri Lanka. Surrounding Pidurangala there are many tall mountains. These include Sigiriya and Kirigalpotta. Sri Lankans are a very diverse people. They speak Sinhala, Tamil and English. They could be Sinhalese or Tamil or Muslim. They practice/follow Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity and Islam religions.
3. Notes on Reading:
| 1 | Dative Case இலங்கைக்கு: A basic meaning of the dative case is ‘in relation to, with respect to’ and therefore it is often used in phrases of direction or orientation (including above, below, etc.) A-dative + direction word = [direction] in relation to A With certain direction words this implies that the entity under discussion is outside of A. In contrast, the use of the genitive case with these words is consistent with being either inside or outside of A. தமிழ் நாட்டுக்குத் தென்கிழக்கே இலங்கை இருக்கிறது – Southeast of [i.e. in relation to] Tamil Nadu is Sri Lanka. தமிழ் நாட்டின் தென்கிழக்கே இலங்கை இருக்கிறது – Southeast of Tamil Nadu is Sri Lanka. தமிழ் நாட்டின் வடகிழக்கே சென்னை இருக்கிறது – In the Northeast [part] of Tamil Nadu is Madras. |
| 2 | Doubling of letters. இலங்கைக்குத் தெற்கே |
| 3 | தெற்கே – in the south. Words that are clearly locative in meaning may omit the case suffix. -ஏ is often added to locative expressions. |
| 4 | உண்டு means is, are, i.e. exists. a) But it is only partially synonymous with இரு in that it has only an “existential” meaning and lacks the ‘be [located]’ and ‘be [in a certain state]’ meanings. Thus, while you can use உண்டு to say things like ‘there are 20 states in India’, you can’t use it to say ‘Tamil Nadu is in India.’ b) உண்டு is used with all tenses no matter what the subject’s identity is. |
| 5 | X-dative Y உண்டு /இருக்கிறது. இலங்கைக்கு …. உண்டு. X-dative Y உண்டு /இருக்கிறது. This construction translates as ‘there is (a) Y for X’ or ‘X has a Y’. X-dative Y இல்லை. This construction translates as ‘there is no Y for X’ or ‘X has no Y’. The normal way to express ‘A has (a) B’ in Tamil is to state that B exists (உண்டு or இரு) to or for (dative) X. இரு can be used for the past, present and future tenses, but உண்டு can only be used for the present. |
| 6 | Genitive case. இலங்கையின். |
| 7 | Locative case. மாத்தளையில் |
| 8 | மிக is a verb qualifier or adverb that is used to indicate the highest degree of that which it qualifies or to intensify something which it qualifies. When it precedes an attribute, it can also be used to indicate the enormity or immensity of something. |
| 9 | Accusative case + விட. ஏரிகளை விட Tamil has no separate “comparative” or “superlative” forms of adjectives (i.e. ‘bigger’, ‘biggest’, etc.) These relative notions are expressed either by implication (as here) or with the help of an explicit relative phrase such as ‘big compared to A, big compared to all others.’ A-accusative விட —> ‘compared to A, than A’ |
| 10 | Locative case. இலங்கையில். |
| 11 | Accusative case + சுற்றி. மலையைச் சுற்றி A-accusative சுற்றி —> ‘around A, surrounding A’ |
| 12 | Doubling of letters. மலையைச் சுற்றி |
| 13 | Locative case. இவற்றில் |
| 14 | Noun + PNG suffix. இலங்கையர்கள். The rational PNG suffixes (அ)ன், (அ)ள், (அ)ர் and (அ)ர்கள் can be added to certain nouns to create nouns referring to humans with the meanings of ‘he of ____’, ‘she of____’, ‘they of ____’. This is similar to the process by which nouns like Sri Lankan, librarian, are formed from nouns like Sri Lanka and library. |
| 15 | மிகுந்த is a noun qualifier, adjective or attributive that is used to express the excess of something; extreme; much. |
| 16 | And, or, also. சிங்களும் தமிழும் ஆங்கிலமும். Translates as: ‘X and Y and Z.’ Note that in English you would add ‘and’ only before the last element in a series, but in Tamil the -உம் must be added to every element in the series to conjoin them with the conjunction ‘and.’ |
| 17 | And, or, also. சிங்களவராயோ, தமிழராயோ, முஸ்லிமாயோ. To say ‘X or Y’ we can also -ஓ to both X and Y. So X-ஓ Y-ஒ? means X or Y? |

17. FAQ
a) How does one distinguish between something being the ‘most important’ and just important’?
- Superlatives like tallest, strongest, highest, most important etc must be derived from context, since there isn’t a superlative form in Tamil like in English. These relative notions must therefore be expressed either by implication or with the help of an explicit relative phrase such as ‘big compared to A, big compared to all others.’
- மிக (a verb qualifier or adverb) can be used to indicate the highest degree of that which it qualifies or to intensify something which it qualifies. When it precedes an attribute, it can also be used to indicate the enormity or immensity of something.
- மிகுந்த (a noun qualifier, adjective or attributive) can be used to express the excess of something; extreme; much.
- The construction ‘A-accusative விட’ can also be used to indicate that X is bigger, smaller etc.
- It translates as: ‘compared to A, than A’
- E.g. ஏரிகளை விட இலங்கையில் நிறைய மலைகள் இருக்கின்றன – compared to lakes, there are many mountains in Sri Lanka.
b) Does “it will see” translate to அது பார்க்கும்? This looks irregular…
Yes it does! The future tense of அது (also அவை) is slightly irregular. It usually ends in an -உம் sound (-க்கும் for strong verbs) but we don’t prescribe a rule because 1) there are so many exceptions and 2) these aren’t used too much.
For example, how many times do animals/objects read, study, buy, scold, discover, and do other actions in the future tense? Not often! Many of these verbs refer to actions ordinarily done by humans. We can’t really say (with the same confidence) that an animal/object will do a certain action in the future in the way we might for a human.
Nonetheless clearly animals/objects will still do some actions in the future, so here are some examples:
Weak verbs: அது செய்யும், அது விளையாடும், அது சாப்பிடும், அது பேசும், அது உட்காரும், அது ஆடும், அது தூங்கும், அது கழுவும்.
Strong verbs: அது பார்க்கும், அது நினைக்கும், அது எடுக்கும், அது குளிக்கும், அது கொடுக்கும், அது நடக்கும், அது பறக்கும், அது இருக்கும்.
