For now, don’t worry too much about what the case suffixes mean – we will cover them in lesson 8.
3. Review the Sandhi rules:
RULE 1) -ய் Adding Rule
If the suffix is added to a word ending in -இ, -ஈ, -எ, -ஏ, or -ஐ, insert a -ய் after the word & before the suffix. E.g:
- மேசை (table) +ஆ → மேசையா?
E.g. இது மேசையா? Is this a table? - மணி (bell) + உம் → மணியும்
E.g. மணியும், மணியின் ஒலியும். Bell and the bell’s sound. - ஈ + ஐ → ஈயை
E.g. ஈயை அடித்தேன். I swatted a fly.
RULE 2) -வ் Adding Rule
If the suffix is added to a word ending in -அ, -ஆ, -ஒ, -ஓ, or -ஊ, insert a -வ் after the word & before the suffix. E.g:
- பேனா (pen) + ஆ→ பேனாவா?
E.g. அது பேனாவா, பென்சிலா? Is that a pen or a pencil? - பூ + ஆ → பூவா?
E.g. பூவா, தலையா? Heads or tails? Literally, Tails or heads? - அம்மா + இடம் → அம்மாவிடம்
E.g. நான் சாப்பாட்டை அம்மாவிடம் கொடுத்தேன். I gave the food to the mother.
RULE 3) Final -உ Dropping Rule:
RULE 3a) If the suffix is added to a word ending in -உ that is non-minimal, we drop the -உ.
RULE 3b) If the word is minimal, the -உ does not drop and we insert a -வ்.
- தெரு + உம் → தெருவும்
E.g. ஊரும், தெருவும். Town and street. - பசு + ஆ → பசுவா?
E.g. பசுவா? ஆடா? Cow or goat? - மடு + இல் → மடுவில்
E.g. மடுவில் மாதா கோவில் உண்டு. Madhu has a Church of Mary.
RULE 4) Consonant Doubling Rule:
If a suffix is added to a minimal word in which the last syllable is a consonant, then the consonant will double.
- கண் + ஆ → கண்ணா?
E.g. கண்ணா, காதா? Eyes or ears? - பல் + உம் → பல்லும்
E.g. பல்லும், நாக்கும் வாயின் பாகங்கள். Teeth and tongue are parts of the mouth. - மண் + ஐ → மண்ணை
E.g. நான் மண்ணை எறிந்தேன். I threw sand.
For other words not covered by the above four rules: assume suffixes are added straight onto the words.
- அவன் + ஆ →அவனா?
E.g. அவனா அழுதது? Is he the one who cried? - தமிழ் +உம் → தமிழும்
E.g. தமிழும், உயிரும் ஒன்று. Tamil and life are one. - அவர்கள் +ஆ → அவர்களா
E.g. அவர்களா அழுதது? Are they the ones who cried?

a) What are the 2 Sandhi Rules not covered in this course?
Sandhi Rules 5 and 6 (under construction) can cause minor changes.
b) Are there any other rules we need to learn to combine different words?
Yes, but not many.
தேங்காய் புணர்ச்சி (under construction).

c) When -ஆ is added to வீடு, the noun changes to வீடா. However when -இல் is added to வீடு the noun changes to வீட்டில், not வீடில். Why?
Certain nouns have their own oblique forms. When they combine with case suffixes, their oblique forms are required.
1) Nouns ending in -அம் convert this ending to -அத்து.
E.g. மாகாணம் —> மாகாணத்து (oblique form)—> மாகாணத்தில் (locative form)
E.g. படம் —> படத்து (oblique form) —> படத்தை (accusative form)
E.g. மரம் —> மரத்து (oblique form) —> மரத்துக்கு (dative form)
2) Except for ‘minimal words’ (those with two syllables or less) and the word ஆறு (six), all nouns ending in -டு and -று double this final hard letter. Nouns ending in -அம் convert this ending to -அத்து.
E.g. நாடு —> நாட்டு (oblique form) —> நாட்டை (accusative form)
E.g. ஆறு (river) —> ஆற்று (oblique form) —> ஆற்றுக்கு (dative form)
E.g. வீடு (house) —> வீட்டு (oblique form) —> வீட்டில் (locative form)
