11. Plural of nouns

There are three main ways that nouns will form their plural form:

Noun ends in a long vowel (-ஆ, -ஏ, -ஈ, -ஊ,-ஓ) or noun is two short syllables and ends in -உ.Add -க்கள்  பூ → பூக்கள்

[fly → flies]  
Noun ends in -அம்Change the ம் to ங் before you add the plural suffix -கள்பாடம்→ பாடங்கள்  
[lesson → lessons]
மரம்  → மரங்கள் 
[tree → trees] 
All other nounsAdd -கள்  நாய் → நாய்கள்
[dog → dogs] 
நரி → நரிகள் [fox → foxes]  
How to form the plural of nouns
  1. The plural suffix is -கள் for most nouns. E.g:
  • நாய் → நாய்கள் [dog → dogs]
  • நரி → நரிகள் [fox → foxes]
  • மாணவர் → மாணவர்கள் [student → students]

2. If the noun ends in a long vowel (-ஆ, -ஏ, -ஓ, -ஈ, -ஊ) or is two syllables and ends in -உ, add the plural suffix -க்கள். E.g:

  • பூ → பூக்கள் [flower → flowers]
  • ஈ → ஈக்கள் [fly → flies]

3. For irrational nouns ending in -அம், change the ம் to ங் before the plural suffix. E.g:

  • மரம்  → மரங்கள் [tree → trees]
  • பாடம்→ பாடங்கள் [lesson → lessons]
  • படம்→ படங்கள் [picture → pictures]
