17. Four Sandhi Rules

For suffixes beginning with a vowel. Insertions are after word & before the suffix.

-ய் Adding Rule	-வ் Adding Rule	-உ Dropping Rule	Consonant Doubling Rule
If the suffix is added to a word ending in -இ, -ஈ, -எ, -ஏ, or -ஐ, we insert a -ய்.	If the suffix is added to a word ending in -அ, -ஆ, -ஒ, -ஓ, or -ஊ, we insert a -வ்.	a) If the suffix is added to a word ending in -உ that is non-minimal (i.e. not of two short syllables), we drop the -உ. b) If the word is minimal (i.e. 2 short syllables), the -உ does not drop and we insert a -வ்.	If a suffix is added to a minimal word (i.e. one with two short syllables) one of which ends in a consonant, then the consonant will double.

1) -ய் Adding Rule 

If the suffix is added to a word ending in-இ, -ஈ, -எ, -ஏ, or -ஐ we insert a -ய்.

1.  மேசை (table) +ஆ → மேசையா?
   E.g. இது மேசையா? Is this a table?
2.  மணி (bell) + உம் → மணியும்
   E.g. மணியும், மணியின் ஒலியும். Bell and its sound.
3.  ஈ + ஐ → ஈயை
   E.g. ஈயை அடித்தேன. I swatted a fly.
4.  மணி + ஆ → மணியா?
   E.g. மணியா ஒலித்தது? Did the bell ring?

2) -வ் Adding Rule 

If the suffix is added to a word ending in -அ, -ஆ, -ஒ, -ஓ, or -ஊ, we insert a -வ்.

1. பேனா (pen) + ஆ→ பேனாவா?
   E.g. அது பேனாவா, பென்சிலா? Is that a pen or a pencil?
2. பூ + ஆ → பூவா?
   E.g. பூவா, தலையா? Heads or tails? Literally,Tails or heads?
3. அம்மா + இடம் → அம்மாவிடம் 
   E.g. நான் சாப்பாட்டை அம்மாவிடம் கொடுத்தேன. I gave the food to the mother.
4. பேனா + ஓடு → பேனாவோடு 
   E.g. நான் பேனாவோடு பென்சிலும் வாங்கினேன். I bought a pencil along with a pen.

3 Final -உ Dropping Rule:

3a) If the suffix is added to a word ending in -உ but which is not of two short syllables.

1. வீடு+ஆ → வீடா?
   E.g. அது உன் வீடா? Is that your house?
2. பத்து +ஆ →பத்தா ? 
   E.g. பத்தா, பதினொன்றா? Ten or eleven?
3. பொட்டு + ஐ → பொட்டை 
   E.g. பொட்டை வை! Place the bindhi /pottu!
4. காசு + இல் → காசில்
   E.g. காசில் நீர் தெறித்தது. Water splashed on currency notes.
5. காது + உம் → காதும்
   E.g. அழகான கண்ணும், காதும். Beautiful eyes and ears.

3b) If the word is made of only 2 short syllables, the -உ does not drop.

1. தெரு + உம் → தெருவும் 
   E.g. ஊரும், தெருவும். Town and street.
2. பசு + ஆ → பசுவா? 
   E.g. பசுவா? ஆடா? Cow or goat?
3. பசு + ஐ →பசுவை 
   E.g. பசுவை விரட்டு. Chase the cow.
4. மடு + இல் → மடுவில் 
   E.g. மடுவில் மாதா கோவில் உண்டு. Madhu has a Church of Mary.

4) Consonant Doubling Rule: 

If a suffix is added to a minimal word (i.e. one with two short syllables) in which the last syllable is a consonant, then the consonant will double.

1. கண் + ஆ → கண்ணா?
   E.g. கண்ணா, காதா? Eyes or ears?
2. பல் + உம் → பல்லும் 
   E.g. பல்லும், நாக்கும் வாயின் பாகங்கள். Teeth and tongue are parts of the mouth.
3. மண் + ஐ → மண்ணை 
   E.g. நான் மண்ணை எறிந்தேன். I threw sand.
4. கல் +இல் → கல்லில் 
   E.g. சீகிரியா கல்லில் செதுக்கியது. Sigiriya is carved in stone.

For other words not covered by the above four rules: assume suffixes are added straight onto the words.

1. அவன் + ஆ →அவனா? 
   E.g. அவனா அழுதது? Is he the one who cried?
2.  தமிழ் +உம் → தமிழும்
   E.g. தமிழும், உயிரும் ஒன்று. Tamil and life are one.
3. அவர்கள் +ஆ → அவர்களா
   E.g. அவர்களா அழுதது? Are those the ones who cried?
