17. FAQs:

a) When is it more appropriate to use the -உம் suffix to express ‘and’ and when should we use ‘மற்றும்’?

The -உம் suffix is usually used to express ‘and’ only when you’re referring to a small number (2-3) of objects. In which case, you would have to use -உம் at the end of each word. Alternatively ‘மற்றும்’ can be used in the same way you would use ‘and’ in English, i.e. only before the last element in a series.

For example:
மாணவர்களும் ஆசிரியர்களும் மனிதர்கள். (Students and teachers are humans)
மாணவர்கள், ஆசிரியர்கள், ஆண்கள் மற்றும் பெண்கள் மனிதர்கள். (Students, teachers, men and women are humans).

b) When is it more appropriate to use the -உம் suffix to express ‘also/too’ and when should we use ‘கூட’?

The -உம் suffix is predominantly used to express ‘also/too’. கூட is only used when you want to add more emphasis to the object which follows the conjunction.

For example:
சிங்கங்களும், பசுக்களும் மிருகங்கள். நாய்களும் மிருகங்கள். (Lions and cows are animals. Dogs are also animals.)
சிங்கங்களும், பசுக்களும் மிருகங்கள். நாய்கள் கூட மிருகங்கள். (Lions and cows are animals. Dogs are also animals.)

c) When is it more appropriate to use the -ஆ suffix to express ‘or’ and when should we use ‘அல்லது’?

When -ஆ is added to two or more words in a sentence it can be used to mean ‘X or Y’?
E.g. இது தமிழா? ஆங்கிலமா? (Is this Tamil or English?)

However, the -ஆ suffix would never be used to mean ‘or’ in statements of fact.

So you would not say:
Wrong: இது தமிழா ஆங்கிலமா. (This is Tamil or English).

Here, you would use அல்லது to indicate ‘or.’
Correct: இது தமிழ் அல்லது ஆங்கிலம். (This is Tamil or English)

d) The flashcard writes ‘fast’ as வேகமான but I have also heard வேகமாக. Are these interchangeable?

While both forms mean ‘quick(ly)’ and have a broadly descriptive function, வேகமான is an adjective and precedes nouns, while வேகமாக is the adverbial form and is used to describe verbs. Similarly, both மெதுவான and மெதுவாக mean ‘slow(ly)’, but மெதுவான is an adjective and precedes nouns, while மெதுவாக is the adverbial form and is used to describe verbs.

So you would say:
என் மெதுவான நாய் மெதுவாக ஓடுகிறது – my slow (மெதுவான) dog ran slowly (மெதுவாக).
என் வேகமான முயல் வேகமாக ஓடுகிறது – my quick (வேகமான) rabbit ran quickly (வேகமாக).
